What is an SSL certificate?
An electronic certificate for SSL-encrypted communication that the certificate authority proves that the operating organization actually exists.
Contains keys necessary for encrypted communication, issuer's signature data, etc.
Information contained in the SSL certificate
- Common name: Domain name (FQDN)
- Organization name: Official legal name of the organization
- Department name: Department name of the organization that processes the certificate (Optional)
- City name: City name where the organization is located
- State name: State/ region where the organization is located
- Country code: Country code where the organization is located
- Expiration date: Start date, end date
- Certificate issuing authority name: Name of the certificate authority that signed the certificate
- Serial number: A number that uniquely identifies the certificate
